Market Reconstruction 2.0: A Financial Services Application of Google Cloud Bigtable and Google Cloud Dataflow

08/2016
FIS Advanced Technology

The FIS Market Reconstruction Platform (MRP) is a market surveillance and forensics utility designed for the daily ingestion, linkage and analytics of U.S. equity and equity options market events over multi-year periods. In May of 2015, FIS’ Advanced Technology group (formerly SunGard) released a white paper detailing its experiences using Google Cloud Bigtable in prototyping the MRP.

Transforming options market data with the Dataflow SDK

12/2017
FIS Advanced Technology (formerly SunGard)

Much of the software development in the capital markets revolves around the transformation and enrichment of data arriving from another system. Traditionally, developers have considered the activities around Extracting, Transforming and Loading (ETL) data a particularly unglamorous dimension of building software products. However, when data-driven enterprises are tasked with harvesting insights from massive data sets, it is quite likely that ETL, in one form or another, is lurking nearby.

Scaling to Build the Consolidated Audit Trail

05/2015
SunGard Data Systems, Inc

Google Cloud Bigtable is a fully managed, high-performance, extremely scalable NoSQL database service offered through the industry-standard, open-source Apache HBase API, powered by Bigtable. The Consolidated Audit Trail (CAT) is a massive, government-mandated database that will track every equities and options market event in the US financial industry over a six-year period. We consider Google Cloud Bigtable in the context of CAT, and perform a series of experiments measuring the speed and scalability of Cloud Bigtable. We find that Google Cloud Bigtable scales well and will be able to meet the requirements of CAT. Additionally, we discuss how Google Cloud Bigtable fits into the larger full technology stack of the CAT platform.

Sebastian is a hugely talented developer with a great ability to deliver large amounts of work on time and of extremely high quality. He was fantastic on both direct client projects and our internal R&D, including a key role building out the prototype for the Consolidated Audit Trail on Google Cloud Platform that was demonstrated at Google Next in 2016. He's an asset to any team, a pleasure to work with and I hope to work with him again in the future. — Neil Palmer, Global Cloud Practice Lead at Egen (January 31, 2017, Neil managed Sebastian directly)
— Neil Palmer
When Sebastian first arrived as an engineering resource for a worldwide enterprise portal project that was over-scoped, understaffed and late, he was already an accomplished Java developer. Given the circumstances, we gleefully ignored that the project was entirely written in Node.js, acted casual and simply hoped for a de minimus velocity tax. Without even a speed bump, our delivery rate escalated and the project, to great relief, was delivered successfully. Sebastian's contributions were paramount, and he was able take his fundamentals, apply them to a solution space that was new to him, and ultimately give the project the boost it needed through the finish line. Fast forward several years and Sebastian had scaled up his contributions and technical leadership, becoming a mentor to many team members and spearheading the engineering work for both exotic internal pursuits and large, custom application development projects. Along the way, he's helped the bigger picture through co-authoring several FinTech technical white papers, as well as contributing to various OSS projects and acting as a product engineering liaison in strategic vendor relationships, kicking the tires on some products that are exhibiting considerable impact today. Sebastian's ability to think strategically and arrive at pragmatic solutions reinforces his technical background and helps his teams ship reliably. The combination means that the product is able to do so without the technical debt accumulation that progressively decays quality. His strong sense of "right" in terms of software and systems architectures and alignment with the project's objectives make Sebastian a particularly excellent navigator of the complex tradeoff matrices faced by many ambitious efforts. Aside from his technical and business competencies, he's also just a great teammate - and firmly on the short-list of engineers I'd work with again in a heartbeat. — Salvatore Sferrazza, Hi-Tech Polymath (January 24, 2017, Salvatore was senior to Sebastian but didn't manage Sebastian directly)
